Hobart H600-T Overheating: Transmission Oil and Control Checks

A 60-quart Hobart H600-T that overheats during a long batch needs both a mechanical and an electrical assessment. This inspection found insufficient transmission oil and electrical connections requiring service.

Equipment
Hobart H600-T, ML 33374; 60-quart planetary mixer.
Reported behavior
Overheating during prolonged operation, with concerns about TIMER and HOLD operation.
Inspection findings
Insufficient transmission oil and connections requiring proper terminals and insulation.
Service status
Inspection documented; oil service, connection repair and overload-relay replacement proposed. Final operating test pending.

What the inspection established

The original equipment record identifies the mixer by both model and ML number. That matters on an older H600-T: machines with a similar appearance can have different electrical configurations, controls and replacement assemblies.

The transmission had insufficient oil. The proposed scope addressed that condition together with selected electrical connections and the motor's thermal overload protection. A proposed timer replacement was a separate option. The record does not establish that the timer caused the overheating or that an internal gearbox overhaul was needed.

Lubrication and shutdown are connected questions

The Hobart classic-mixer service manual treats transmission lubrication as a defined service task. It specifies checking the sight-glass reference with the machine stopped, warns against overfilling, and directs the technician to current lubrication information for the correct product.

That gives this job a clear starting point: restore model-appropriate lubrication and check for loss or leakage, then measure how the mixer behaves. Repeated shutdowns also require examination of the motor load, protection and connections. A hotter machine is not, by itself, proof of a failed motor.

The proposed repair and verification

For this inspection, the recommended work was transmission oil service, properly crimped connections with restored insulation, and preventive replacement of the aged overload relay. Completion requires a controlled operating test rather than simply observing that the motor starts.

Useful records include the recipe and batch size, operating speed, elapsed time before the symptom, motor current and whether a protective device opens. The technician should also verify TIMER and HOLD independently. If abnormal heat, current or noise remains, additional mechanical inspection needs its own findings and authorization.

What the operator can record

Before the visit, record whether the mixer stops abruptly or gradually loses performance, whether the control mode changes the symptom, and how long it runs from cold. Stop using a machine with a burning smell, damaged wiring or new mechanical noise. Internal electrical and lubrication service belongs to a qualified technician.

  • Send the model plate privately, including ML and electrical configuration.
  • Describe the agitator, recipe, batch weight and selected speed.
  • Keep the maintenance history and any earlier oil-service record available.
