Manitowoc NEO UYF0140A Runs but Does Not Freeze

Water circulation and a running compressor do not establish that an ice machine is refrigerating correctly. A recent NEO service discussion described an evaporator that did not reach freezing temperature even though the compressor started.

Reviewed · KONGRA LLC

Model discussed
Manitowoc NEO UYF0140A-161B undercounter ice machine.
Reported symptom
Water supply/circulation working; compressor starts; evaporator does not reach freezing.
Assessment
Sealed-system trouble considered. A refrigerant leak location was not confirmed.
Status
Diagnostic and repair options discussed; no completed refrigeration repair documented.

This is different from a dirty condenser alone

KONGRA has a separate documented NEO condenser-cleaning case. That work addresses heat rejection and access to the coil. The present symptom asks a different question: whether the machine develops the required refrigeration during its freeze sequence.

Condenser condition, ambient temperature and water conditions still belong in the assessment. However, if the compressor runs while the evaporator remains too warm, an operating observation must be connected with the machine's sequence and measured refrigeration performance. Cleaning is not a universal solution to every no-ice complaint.

Use the matching NEO diagnostic path

Manitowoc's NEO documentation separates operating conditions, cleaning and checks before service. The technician's handbook adds sequence and refrigeration diagnosis. The exact model and refrigerant plate are important because a newer replacement model may use a different refrigerant and charge.

For the reported symptom, a technician verifies the freeze state, water distribution and heat rejection, then assesses refrigerant-side behavior. A low charge, restriction, valve problem or poor compressor performance must be distinguished by testing. Compressor sound alone cannot identify which correction is needed.

A suspected leak is not yet a repair prescription

The discussion considered a refrigerant leak, but did not establish its location. A suitable repair scope needs the actual failure identified, compatible parts and refrigerant information, and a verification plan. It should also separate access and repair feasibility from replacement economics.

Where refrigerant work is justified and within the qualified provider's scope, the completed job requires appropriate leak correction and system service followed by operating checks. This guide does not claim that the machine was recharged, that an evaporator was replaced or that a particular part cured it.

What helps before an ice-machine visit

Record when the last normal batch occurred, whether water moves over the evaporator, any service indication and the room conditions. Send the exact model and installation photo privately. Do not chip ice with tools or add refrigerant without a diagnosed cause.

The most useful final result is repeatable ice production across complete cycles, with no recurring fault. That outcome should be recorded after the approved work, rather than inferred from the first compressor start.

Send the full UYF model, the observed cycle behavior and current production. The diagnostic visit separates water/airflow conditions from refrigeration faults before parts are selected.
