Commercial Dishwasher Not Draining
Before anything is diagnosed, one question has to be settled: is this machine supposed to be holding that water? A great many drainage calls turn out to be normal retained-tank operation, and a great many real faults get tolerated for weeks because nobody was sure.
What the symptom actually tells you
Commercial dishmachines are not domestic dishwashers with a bigger motor. Many are designed to fill a heated wash tank at the start of service and keep it through the day, recovering and reheating between racks, and to empty only at the end-of-day drain. On those machines, water sitting in the tank at 2pm is the machine working correctly. On other machines and on some conveyor and specialty units, the intended behaviour is different again.
So the first thing to establish is what the manual for your specific model says should happen, and at which point in the day. Once that is settled, the actual symptom usually resolves into one of four patterns — slow emptying, no emptying, water backflowing into the machine, or water reaching the floor — and those four point in noticeably different directions.
The second thing to establish is whether the problem is the machine or the building. A dishmachine shares a drain line with other fixtures, and a slow floor sink or a backing-up prep sink nearby is strong evidence that the line, not the machine, is the subject. That check costs nothing and can change the entire scope of the visit.

Four patterns that get reported the same way
These are categories to narrow the question before a visit, not a remote diagnosis. Confirmation requires on-site measurement.
- Water sits in the wash tank during serviceOn a retained-tank machine this is intended operation. Confirm against the manual for your model before treating it as a fault.
- The end-of-day drain does not empty the machineThis is the genuine drainage question. It points at the drain arrangement the model actually uses — a drain pump, a gravity drain, or a drain valve — and at what is downstream of it.
- It empties, but slowlyConsistent with a partial restriction, with reduced pumping performance, with a drain valve not opening fully, or with a downstream line that cannot take the flow. The restriction, if there is one, can be in the machine, in the drain line, or beyond it.
- Water comes back up into the machineBackflow points downstream — a restricted or backed-up line, or an installation condition — more often than at the machine itself.
- Water reaches the floorTreat as urgent for slip and sanitation reasons. Stop using the machine, isolate the area, and report it as an overflow rather than a drainage complaint.
- Other fixtures nearby are slow or backing up tooStrong indication the subject is the shared drain line rather than the dishmachine, which changes both the scope and who should attend.
What you can safely observe yourself
These are cool-machine, power-off checks and normal operator screens only. Nothing here involves opening the machine or touching plumbing.
- Check the manual for your model to establish whether the tank is intended to be retained during service
- Note at which point in the day the failure occurs — during service, or at the end-of-day drain
- With the machine off and cool, lift out the wash tank strainers and scrap screens and check for obvious debris
- Check the scrap basket and any removable filter that the manual says an operator may remove
- Check whether a nearby floor sink, prep sink or floor drain is also slow or backing up
- Note whether the machine empties slowly, not at all, backflows, or overflows
- Photograph any message or indicator on the machine's operator panel
- Record the make, model and serial number from the rating plate
- Do not pour chemical drain cleaner into or near the machine
- Do not change detergent, rinse aid or sanitizer dosing to try to fix a drainage symptom
- Do not bypass, jumper or defeat any switch, float, interlock or safety device
- Do not open pump housings, remove panels or disassemble drain components
- Do not reach into a hot tank or handle hot water; allow the machine to cool first
- Do not keep running the machine if water is reaching the floor
What requires a technician on site
- Confirmation of the intended drainage behaviour for the specific model against manufacturer documentation
- The drain arrangement in use — drain pump, gravity drain or drain valve — and its actual operation
- Pump operation and electrical condition measured rather than inferred from sound
- Restriction located within the machine, at the connection, or downstream in the building line
- Float, level control and cycle-sequence behaviour observed during operation
- Installation conditions: line fall, air gap arrangement, connection height and venting
- Whether the appropriate party is a service technician or a licensed plumbing contractor for the building line
- Undercounter, door-type, conveyor and specialty dishmachines differ in drainage design; the model determines what applies
- CMA L-1X documentation describes chemical sanitizing and pumped drainage. The exact drainage components depend on the model revision. It must still meet the manufacturer's operating water-temperature and sanitizer requirements; do not apply another model's booster-heater troubleshooting.
- CMA EST documentation describes that family's own drain and tank-retention arrangement, and the CMA-180 manual describes that model's holding and cycle behaviour. Neither describes the other, and no single drain-versus-retain rule covers all units.

Frequently asked questions
Water stays in the machine between cycles. Is that a fault?+
Often it is not. Many commercial dishmachines are designed to retain a heated wash tank between cycles all through service, and emptying only at the end of the day is normal operation for those models. The fault question is whether the machine empties when it is supposed to empty — typically at the end-of-day drain — and whether the water level and condition during service are what the manual describes.
How do I know whether my machine is supposed to drain or hold?+
The manual for your specific model states it. Door-type and undercounter machines with a heated wash tank generally hold; some conveyor and specialty machines behave differently again. If nobody on site is sure, that is worth saying — establishing intended behaviour is the first step of the diagnostic rather than an inconvenience.
The machine drains but very slowly. Is that different from not draining at all?+
Yes, and it is worth reporting as its own symptom. Slow emptying can reflect a partial restriction, reduced pumping performance, a drain valve that is not opening fully, or a downstream line that cannot take the flow — several different findings, not one. Slow emptying, complete failure to empty, water coming back up into the machine, and water overflowing onto the floor are four distinguishable patterns that point in different directions, and they are also treated differently in urgency.
The floor sink nearby backs up too. Does that matter?+
It matters a great deal. If other fixtures on the same line are also slow or backing up, the investigation may be about the building drainage rather than the dishmachine. Checking whether a nearby sink, floor drain or prep sink shares the symptom is one of the most useful things anyone on site can do before calling.
Can we pour a drain cleaner down it to clear the line?+
No. Do not use chemical drain cleaners in or around a commercial dishmachine. They can damage machine components and seals, they create a hazardous condition for the next person who opens the machine, and they interact unpredictably with detergent and sanitizer chemistry already in the system.
