Sub-Zero Refrigerator Not Cooling
A warm Sub-Zero is not one fault — several different faults can look identical from the outside. This page explains how to tell them apart in the way that actually helps, so the first visit starts with real information.
What the symptom actually tells you
When a Sub-Zero stops holding temperature, the useful question is not what part failed. It is which pattern the appliance is showing. A refrigerator compartment that is warm while the freezer is untouched is a different investigation from both compartments drifting together, and an appliance that recovers overnight is a different investigation from one that has been steadily warm since yesterday.
Many Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer combinations use separate cooling systems. A problem confined to one compartment helps focus inspection, but model-specific temperature, airflow, controls and cooling measurements still determine the cause. Columns, undercounter units and older models need their own documentation, so the model number from the rating plate changes the conversation more than any description of the noise the unit is making.
Generation is part of that. Classic built-in units, the BI series and PRO units differ in controls, layout, airflow and the documentation that applies, and Sub-Zero publishes separate use-and-care material for them. Catalogue listings that carry only model numbers and dimensions are not service documentation and are not treated as such here. Send the model and serial number privately when you book rather than posting it publicly, and the right documentation is pulled before the visit.
It is also worth separating long running time from an actual temperature failure. An appliance that runs far more than it used to but still holds its compartments at temperature is a different report from one whose measured temperature has risen. Give an independent thermometer reading alongside the running observation; the two together are much more useful than either alone.

There is no safe way for an owner to read refrigerant pressures, measure a compressor winding or evaluate a sealed system, and nothing here asks you to. The purpose is to arrive at a description precise enough that the technician can plan the visit and bring the right instruments.

- Refrigerator compartment warm, freezer normalHelps focus the inspection on that compartment's own cooling, airflow and controls. It does not identify the cause: measurements against your model's documentation still decide between a cooling, airflow, defrost, sensor or control condition.
- Both compartments warm togetherSuggests something common to the whole appliance: condenser airflow and condition, control power, or a control-board or user-setting problem. What is checked, and in what order, follows the documentation for your specific model.
- Steady warmth that never recoversPoints toward loss of cooling capacity or a system that is not running at all. Worth noting whether you can hear a compressor or fans running.
- Recovers overnight, drifts warm during the dayCan reflect an appliance that is cooling but cannot keep up with the load, or one that is being interrupted periodically. Load, door openings, sealing, ambient temperature and defrost behaviour all belong in this category alongside early component faults.
- Display reads normal but the food is warmThe gap between the control's reported temperature and an independent thermometer is itself a finding. It can reflect setpoint or display behaviour, sensor lag or sensor accuracy — and it does not remove cooling capacity from the list of things to measure.
- Started right after loading, a power interruption, or a moveA recent event puts recovery time, restart behaviour, door alignment or a disturbed setting ahead of component failure in the order of investigation. It does not rule failure out — it changes what is checked first.
- Ice or frost visible, or the unit runs constantlyFrost accumulation and continuous running are separate observations worth recording. Both bear on airflow, defrost and sealing, and both are far more useful when noted before the visit than reconstructed afterwards.
What you can safely observe yourself
All of these can be done with the doors closed or with a normal look inside. None require tools, panels or power work.
- Protect perishable food promptly by moving it to working refrigeration or ice as needed. Record compartment temperatures with an appliance thermometer following its instructions; do not leave food warm while waiting for a diagnostic reading.
- Note whether one compartment or both are affected, and by roughly how much
- Note whether the temperature recovers at any point in the day or stays warm
- Check the door closes fully and the gasket is not folded, torn or held open by a shelf, drawer or item
- Note anything that changed recently: a large warm load, a power outage, a house electrical event, a move, or a changed setting
- Look at the condenser area for visible dust build-up and confirm the grille is not blocked by stored items
- Note any frost or ice you can see, and where it is
- Write down the model and serial number from the rating plate, and photograph any message on the display
- Do not remove interior panels, rear panels or the condenser cover
- Do not probe, meter or touch any electrical component, terminal or wiring
- Do not attempt anything involving refrigerant — it is regulated work and requires certification
- Do not force a defrost, run a forced-cycle or service-mode sequence, or unplug and replug to clear the fault
- Do not melt frost with a heat gun, hairdryer or sharp tool
- Do not change multiple settings at once trying to compensate; it obscures the original behaviour

- Sub-Zero built-in and integrated refrigeration, including column and combination units
- The model number from the rating plate determines which service documentation, layout and measurements apply; combination, column and undercounter units differ
- Very old units may have parts availability limits; KONGRA will say so rather than quote around it
- Refrigerant work is regulated and is performed only within KONGRA's legal license, insurance and practical service scope

The refrigerator side is warm but the freezer is still frozen. Does that narrow anything down?+
It helps focus the inspection. Many Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer combinations use separate cooling systems, so a problem confined to one compartment gives the technician somewhere to start. It does not settle the cause on its own: model-specific temperature, airflow, control and cooling measurements still determine what has actually failed. The temperature recovers overnight and drifts up during the day. Is that still a fault?+
It can be. Intermittent recovery can reflect an appliance that is still cooling but cannot keep up with the load it is being given, or that something cycles it off periodically. Heavy loading, a door that is opened frequently, a seal that is not closing, a warm ambient location, restricted condenser airflow and defrost-cycle behaviour all produce that pattern, as do early-stage component faults. Steady warmth that never recovers points more toward loss of cooling capacity.
Can I trust the number on the display?+
The display may show a setpoint or a sensor-based temperature, depending on the model and selected screen. Sensor lag or inaccuracy can also affect the reading. Compare it with an independent appliance thermometer using the model instructions; a normal display does not rule out a cooling fault.
How long is the food safe?+
Do not wait to find out. KONGRA does not publish a universal number, because safe holding time depends on the actual food temperature, the type of food, how long it has been above temperature and how the compartment was loaded. Read the real temperature with an independent thermometer and protect the food promptly — move it to working refrigeration or ice — following current USDA food-safety guidance, or your local health authority's guidance at a commercial site.
Should I unplug it or reset it before you arrive?+
Avoid repeated resets solely to erase an error or test a fault. Follow the model's operating instructions, record the message first, and tell the technician about any reset already performed. If there is smoke, burning smell, an electrical hazard or water near electrical parts, stop using the appliance and follow the manufacturer's safety instructions; preserving diagnostic evidence never takes priority over safety.
