Scientific Micro-CT Image Artifacts: Bruker SKYSCAN and ZEISS Xradia

Scientific micro-CT and X-ray microscopy can produce a visible image artifact without a failed X-ray source, detector or motion stage. Reconstruction assumptions, sample composition, projection geometry, handling and scan conditions all affect the final 3D volume. A single reconstructed slice therefore cannot establish what needs repair.

Ring artifacts and detector effects

Ring-like patterns may be associated with nonuniform detector response, preprocessing or reconstruction. Their appearance and location depend on instrument geometry and software, so not every ring identifies the same defective detector element. For evidence preservation, retain the unmodified dataset, original scan metadata, sample orientation and reconstruction settings in the laboratory's approved storage system. Do not delete or overwrite source projections merely to make an artifact disappear.

Beam hardening: a physics problem before a parts order

Densely attenuating samples may produce cupping or streak-like artifacts because X-ray attenuation depends on energy. ZEISS describes spectral filters, scaling phantoms and computational reconstruction options for mitigating beam-hardening effects on Xradia systems. These product capabilities illustrate why an artifact can be a reconstruction/materials issue rather than a broken tube. Select any acquisition or calibration method only from the specific instrument's approved documentation and laboratory protocol.

Distinguish the instruments

Bruker SKYSCAN 1272, 1273 and 1276 are different microCT systems. The public Bruker support catalog identifies the model families; 1276 is a preclinical/in-vivo radiation-producing system. A particular ring, sample motion, scan stability or detector warning must be tied to the installed configuration; no unified SKYSCAN fault-code table was verified for all three models. Proprietary or confidential method notes must not be reproduced as general service instructions.

ZEISS Xradia Versa has documented material/reconstruction and scaling options. An image artifact may warrant specialist evaluation of sample preparation or the imaging pipeline before any hardware intervention is considered. Where the hardware itself is suspected, qualified X-ray equipment personnel must handle radiation controls, guarding and service validation.

A non-invasive technical evidence package

A facility can preserve its instrument model, application, software version, acquisition settings, artifact screenshots and a comparison with prior approved reference data. Avoid posting confidential sample details or biomedical data publicly. This guide is intended to improve communication with authorized imaging specialists; it is not an offer of Bruker/ZEISS X-ray tube, detector, shielding or interlock repair by KONGRA.
